Gold was orthodontists’ preferred choice

•In the early 1900s, 14- to 18-karat gold was orthodontists’ preferred choice of material for braces because it could be easily shaped and stretched.
Why gold? It is malleable and easy to shape. Gold had its drawbacks, however — because of its softness, it required frequent adjustments and was expensive! These bands wrapped entirely around each tooth — the original \”metal mouth\” was real gold or silver!
•At the end of the 20th century, NASA developed one of the most important orthodontic advances, which would improve the way teeth are realigned forever.
This invention was heat-activated nickel-titanium alloy wires, which replaced the common steel.
